Healthy Cool-Weather Treats

This weather is wonderful! I love the cool temps, and did you catch the full moon?? Wow! The boys and I had some great early morning walks by moonlight that was so bright, we didn’t even need a flashlight!

During this weather transition, I have to keep reminding myself to drink more water– I just don’t like water in the cold weather. So I switch to herbal teas, of which I have many. I love the Tazo and Eden brands, and some of the new Mattes that are on the market. I bought one yesterday that was laced with spices and cacao! I came across a terrific hot chocolate recipe on the web that I will share with you so you all can take advantage of the goodness of rich dark chocolate and spices while warming yourself up after an outdoor walk.

“Spiced Hot Chocolate”

1 qt of non-dairy milk– soy, rice or almond

6 ounces dark chocolate- at least 70% cacao

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/8 teaspoon of each: cardamom, sea salt and black pepper

Whisk all over low heat until chocolate is melted and everything is smooth and steaming hot, about 5 minutes. Pour into a warm mug and enjoy! The Ayurvedic spices boost digestion and energy while the cacao is full of antioxidants and magnesium. Good and good for you!

Hot, detoxifying baths with Epsom salts are my favorite way to end the evening, but they can be very drying in this weather. Be sure to slather on a rich, paraben-free moisturizer or oil before donning your pajamas. Treat your feet and hands to extra care by slathering on cream and wearing socks and cotton gloves before going to sleep. You will wake up feeling refreshed and moisturized at the same time! Be sure to drink a big glass of water after a hot detox bath to help replace some of the fluids that were lost during sweating. Remember, your body gets rid of toxins through sweating in hot baths, and the higher body temperature also thwarts the proliferation of viruses and germs, so don’t be afraid to get in there and sweat for 20 minutes!!
