New Year’s Resolutions
Greetings from Lake Placid, where it is a chilly 0 degrees, and happy new year!!
Did you have a good 2008, or are you looking for a fresh start in 2009? Have you made your resolutions for this year? If you are like many Americans, you have made resolutions having to do with losing weight, eating more healthfully, or exercising more. And like most Americans, those resolutions will be out the window within the first 60 days! Why is that? Is it that we lack willpower? I don’t think so. I think it’s because we lack a real plan.
Look at sports, if you will. Every team goes into a game with one goal in mind—to win the game. But if it stopped there, how successful would their intentions be? Instead, they have a well-thought out game plan. They know who will do what and when, on offense and on defense. Doesn’t that sound like a good idea? Well, we need to approach our goals in the same well-thought out way. We have to have a real plan in place, not just the idea, no matter how noble it is. For example, if you want to exercise more, great, but let’s go beyond that. Do you have the right equipment, like shoes and exercise clothing? Do you know what kind of exercise it will be? Will you be doing this alone, with a friend, at a gym, or with DVDs? Do you see where I am going with this? You need the specifics, and then you can think about being successful, whatever the goal may be.
My goal as a health counselor is to help you set goals, develop a plan of attack and then accomplish those goals. I love what I do because it effects real positive change in my clients, and I can see the incredible sense of empowerment that comes with accomplishing well-planned goals. I hope that I can help you this year accomplish your health goals! Please check out my resource page to see what types of programs and individual sessions I offer. And check out the New Year’s group I am starting in a few weeks in my home—guaranteed to be fun, enlightening and productive to all!!
Take time to decide what kind of year you want 2009 to be. Ponder a while, and then drop me a line or call me up. I can’t wait to hear from you!
Cheers!
Diane

I am trying a new approach to resolutions this year. I have made a list of things I want to do, and am picking one or two a month to add to my routine.
January is take Fish Oil everyday, drink green tea three times a week instead of coffee.
February is calcium supplement and 10 sit ups.
I have some ideas for March, but it is too early to commit!
that way I wont set myself up for failure, just babysteps. It can’t be any less successful than what I have done in the past!
Karen, you’ve got the right idea. Small steps, carefully planned out. You need to know what you are doing ahead of time! I myself am adding to my morning exercise routine– I already walk Bolo for 30-45 minutes, but I will be adding bicycling in the basement when the weather is lousy (like last week!) I also added deep-knee bends to my walk for when Bolo is doing his “stop and sniff” routine. Thank goodness it is early, and no one can see me!!!
