Book Review- “Nourishing Wisdom”

I just finished reading a marvelous book I have to recommend to all of you who struggle with what to eat. It’s called Nourishing Wisdom, by Marc David. He calls it “a mind-body approach to nutrition and well-being”, and I wholeheartedly agree. As a self-proclaimed ‘foodie’, I often fight with myself regarding what is best for me to eat. And, like many of you, I feel guilty for eating the ‘wrong’ foods.
Well, read this book. The author explores the reasons behind everything from cravings to the psychology of chewing in this fine book.
This is not a diet book! Rather, it looks at humans as eaters, and why we eat like we do. It digs into the reasons we eat– sustainance, pleasure, emotional needs and really opens them up for thought. Each chapter finishes with a recap on the main points as well as ideas to reflect upon– I love this book. Reading this book really hit many points that rang true for me, for example, the notion that “we eat what we are” is an interesting one. This is a bit of a twist from “you are what you eat” and places some of the responsibility on us. He explains the notion of conscious eating even if the food choices we make are not the best ones.
David also looks at the roles of women and the relationship with food- one of nourisher– and even delves into the touchy subject of body image. Even I don’t like going there!
I hope that you will explore this book. It really made me think about eating in a much more conscious way. There is so much to learn and explore about the foods we eat, not just getting the right amounts of nutrients. Eating is nourishment for the spirit and the soul as well for the body, and David has brought this element to the forefront in this book. Thank you!
