Dry Skin Brushing

Well, it’s that time of year again: summer is fading fast and fall is soon to be here. With it comes cooler, drier weather and drier skin. After a season of sunshine and outdoor activities, our skin starts to lose its tan and get a bit flaky and dull. Enter, my favorite, dry skin brushing.

Dry skin brushing, when done on a daily basis, brings back the glow of healthy skin. It also maintains our largest detoxifying organ– the skin–and encourages it to do its job unencumbered by dead cells and debris. Dry skin brushing also stimulates circulation and the movement of lymph. It is a wonderful way to spend time with yourself, giving your body something it can really appreciate!

So how do you begin? Get yourself a nice Sisel brush from the Body Shop, Bath & Body Works or similar store. You can use a dry loofa, but it isn’t quite the same. Begin by brushing, in a circular motion, your feet and ankles, working your way up to the torso. Constantly put the emphasis of your strokes on the up swing, in other words, toward the heart to further aid circulation of lymph. You should use a pressure that feels comfortable to you, and leaves your skin a mild pink. As your skin gets used to dry brushing, you will be able to use more pressure. DO NOT brush over damaged, broken or rashy skin. While you’re brushing, keep your thoughts on what you are doing, loving your body and thanking it for being so good and patient with you!

Once you have brushed your entire body, and you are all pink and glowing, take a nice warm shower and follow up with moisturizer or a scented oil. Do this on a daily basis, and look forward to wonderfully clear, smooth skin in no time!

I hope you will spend the time on yourself to try dry skin brushing. I know it will improve the quality of your skin and of your overall health. Try it! You are worth it!

warmly, Diane
