An early start in August
I am not a summer person, and it stands to reason that August is not my favorite month. In fact, I could go so far as to say that August is my least favorite month of the year. The combination of heat and humidity do not make me want to go out and take a hike! That said, I make sure that I am up early and out the door by daybreak to get my morning exercise with my beloved poodle, Bolo. (Yes, he’s that handsomest of dogs in the picture!).
I was pleased to feel the coolness this morning as I ventured out onto my deck, long before the sun came up. The temperature read 63 degrees- perfect! After I read my mail and fixed breakfast for the boys so that it would be ready when we returned, I grabbed my shoes and dog and headed out for the trails.
One thing that is nice about August is the emergence of all the beautiful field flowers. I am not an allergy sufferer, so I look forward to seeing the goldenrod, rag weed and black-eyed susans blooming everywhere. The asters are even popping up here and there- you know them by their brilliant purple flowers. I make a habit of pocketing my garden snips so I can cut a small bouquet on my way back. This morning we logged on a couple miles and happily managed to avoid any deer flies that may have been early risers. (I hate those things!) Lots of bunnies scampering about, and the occasional deer leaping through the fields.
I picked a nice arrangement of B.E. Susans, goldenrod, Queen Anne’s lace, and asters for the kitchen and headed back. It’s my favorite start to my mornings, especially when I am not looking forward to a stress-filled day! I will try to draw upon my early morning peace throughout the day, as the pace of the day quickens.
I encourage all of you to try some early morning time outside. Whether it is walking, running, stretching or having a cup of tea in your pajamas on the lawn, take the time to breathe in the fresh air of a new day full of promise. Breathe in the possibilities of the new day and breathe out the cobwebs of the night’s sleep. Look upwards and say thank you for the wonders all around you, and ask for a blessing as you enter the new day.
May you make the most of this new day.
peace,
Diane
